How to keep your nails in tip top shape
While many people believe plenty of calcium is the answer to healthier nails as we age, it’s important to remember that good health often requires a more holistic approach. While providing your body with all the essentials for healthy nails is important, there are a few tips you can try to help them grow and stay strong from the outside too.
Experts, including the American Academy of Dermatology stress how important it is to never use your nails as a tool. For example, you can easily use a utensil to open a soft drink can rather than risk breaking a nail on a particularly stubborn lid.
It should go without saying that biting your nails won’t help keep them in shape. If you know you struggle with this habit during times of stress, try carrying a pack of gum for something else to chew, or splurge on a manicure to remind yourself to leave those gorgeous nails alone.
When you can’t avoid getting your hands a little dirty, such as while out in the garden, doing dishes in hot water or using cleaning chemicals around the house, be sure to give your nails the best protection possible. A simple pair of rubber gloves will stop hot water and chemicals from weakening your nails and a sturdy pair of gloves for the garden will help to protect against chipping from stones and dirt.
Don’t forget to moisturize as this is great for the skin on your hands as well as for smooth and healthy nails.
You may also find that you need to increase your intake of essential vitamins and minerals with a multivitamin supplement designed especially for hair, skin and nail health.
