Men’s health: the basics
Although many health issues are common to both males and females, men also have health issues that are unique and important for them to know about. For example, men’s health problems can range from serious chronic illnesses to wellness issues such as exercise, nutrition, emotional health and weight management. As they get older, men may also become more concerned with the effects of aging, changes in sexuality and prostate health.1
Many men experience urinary symptoms as they mature. This can be caused by inflammation of the prostate gland (prostatitis), which is found at the base of the bladder. Difficulty passing urine may also be caused by a blockage in the urethra which runs through the prostate gland. One of the known causes for this is benign prostatic enlargement (BPH).2
There are several supplements that may help to maintain a healthy prostate gland and reduce the symptoms of BPH. Saw palmetto use can be traced as far back as the Mayans, who used it as a tonic. Today, it’s more commonly used to help relieve the symptoms of BPH,3 including night‐time urination and impaired urinary flow.
Zinc is a trace mineral that’s essential for the functioning of several enzymatic and cellular processes. It’s found mainly in the muscles and bones, but also occurs in high concentrations in the prostate gland and testes.4 Zinc is necessary for the normal, healthy functioning of the male reproductive system and adequate levels are needed for sperm density, motility and viability. Men should also maintain adequate selenium levels in order to support prostate health and maintain healthy sperm.
