Tips for living well at any age – your 20s
Your 20’s are a time for both hard work and fun, with many people completing tertiary studies and embarking on a new career. Other common life changes may include getting married, buying a house and for some, starting their own family. You may have a lot of energy and feel great in your 20’s, but it’s still important that you look after your health. Here are some tips to help promote good health during your 20’s and beyond.
Drink alcohol in moderation
Alcohol is the most widely used social drug in Australia and binge drinking can be particularly common in young people. Alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and small intestine and affects many body systems, including the cardiovascular system, nervous system, gastrointestinal system, the liver, hormone levels and nutrition.1 While it may be tempting to indulge in social drinking in your 20’s, even single episodes of heavy drinking can have an impact on your health. For example, alcohol disrupts neurotransmitters in the brain, which can trigger mood and behavioral changes. These changes may include memory loss and agitation.2
In addition to the fluids we get from the food we eat, we also need to drink plenty of liquid every day to stop us from getting dehydrated. Try to avoid sugary soft drinks that can be high in calories and bad for your teeth. The best choices include water, milk and fruit juices.3
Eat a balanced diet
Eating a good wholesome diet is important at any age and can help you to stay in good health and shape, provide adequate energy and promote feelings of wellbeing. A well balanced diet consists of a large proportion of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, as well as smaller amounts of lean meats and dairy.4
