Health benefits of hops
Published February 26, 2015
Hops extract is derived from the flowers of the humulus lupulus plant. Although it’s most famous for being used to brew beer, hops is also a valuable herbal remedy that offers a number of health benefits including:
- Provides calming effects – Hops has been used traditionally* for its sedative action to help calm the nerves. This medicinal use is believed to be inspired by the observation of sleepiness in European hops‐pickers.1
- Relieves sleeplessness and insomnia – Hops appears to have a sleep‐promoting action and may be beneficial during times of sleeping difficulty.
- Relieves mild anxiety – Hops may help to reduce the effects of restlessness and mild anxiety, a common cause of sleeping problems.
- Aids digestive processes – Hops has been used traditionally* as an ‘aromatic bitter’ to assist digestion and support a healthy appetite.
