What can Horseradish do for your immunity?
Published February 24, 2015
Horseradish belongs to the Brassicaceae family, as does broccoli, cabbage, mustard, and wasabi. It contains volatile pungent compounds called mustard oils and is commonly used as a cheaper substitute for wasabi. It’s been cultivated for more than 2000 years and today horseradish is still commonly used as a condiment and for its health benefits.1
Horseradish has long been used for relief of upper respiratory tract congestion making it a useful herb when suffering with nasal congestion from colds, allergies and hayfever.
Horseradish is often included in formulas with other herbs and nutrients such as garlic and vitamin C. This combination works well to relieve mucous congestion and support the body’s immune system. These types of formulations are usually promoted to relieve allergies, hayfever and mild upper respiratory tract infections such as colds. Horseradish can also be of benefit if a cough is present.
Another benefit of horseradish is its antimicrobial properties. By helping to fight bacteria, it may help your body combat bronchial complaints and respiratory congestion if caused by bacteria.
Horseradish also has topical uses. It increases blood flow when applied to the skin, therefore may help relieve muscular aches and pains.
Although horseradish has many benefits including aiding digestion and assisting peripheral circulation, its most commonly promoted as an ingredient to help relieve mucous congestion. If you’re prone to hayfever or allergies, or feel a cold coming on and your sinuses are starting to feel blocked, try taking horseradish to help relieve nasal congestion.
