Superfood: Goji berries

Goji berries have become more and more popular as people try this superfood and realize just how tasty they are, while still packed with health benefits.
These berries are small and typically consumed in dry form – similar in appearance to raisins but colored red. You can eat them raw, cooked or in herbal teas and juices, as well as in supplement form. They are from the Solanaceae family, a food group that also includes potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and aubergines1.
Studies have found the fruit is beneficial as part of a balanced diet and contains a number of health benefits. These include high levels of antioxidants, which are helpful in minimizing damage from free radicals. They also include complex polysaccharides and monosaccharides, lutein and zeaxanthin (which are good for eye health), fiber, protein and carbohydrates.
As a berry, they also belong to a group of fruits that offer numerous health benefits. Nutrition experts agree a colorful meal is often a healthier one, with the deep reds, blues and purples of berries adding a good mix of vitamins to any diet2.
In terms of vitamins, goji berries have been proven to show high levels of both vitamin A and vitamin C.3 These essentials are important throughout the body for bone and muscle strength due to their ability to synthesize collagen. Goji berries also contain some calcium, which helps /bone-health/bone health.
