The rhizomes (roots) of ginger, botanical name Zingiber officinale, have been used as both a food and medicine since antiquity and have played a prominent role in various traditional systems of medicine. Historically, ginger has been used around the world to assist in the management of a variety of ailments particularly upset stomachs, nausea and as an aid to digestion.1 Ginger is still used today for many of these indications.
Ginger may support digestive health by helping to:
- Aid digestion ‐ It appears to benefit the digestive system by stimulating the flow of saliva, bile and gastric secretions, and increasing the movement of food through the digestive tract.2
- Relieve symptoms of indigestion – Indigestion, or dyspepsia, is a term used to describe general digestive discomfort, which may be accompanied by a feeling of uncomfortable fullness during or after a meal, bloating, nausea and burning in the upper abdomen.3
- Relieve flatulence – Ginger has a ‘carminative’ action and may help expel gas from the digestive tract.
- Alleviate nausea and vomiting – Ginger appears to have mild anti‐emetic properties and may help relieve nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness and morning sickness.
Ginger and supplementation
Ginger supplements are made from the fresh ginger rhizome.
